4 The Pudkrevi defined units of distance according to units of time. Since servers synchronized their status information at regular intervals, the universal measure of time for Pudkrevi was the synchronization unit or “sync” (about the same amount of time as 2.5 minutes on Earth). They then defined a “light-length” as the distance traveled by light during one millionth of a sync. A light-length is about equivalent to half a meter or 20 inches. This reliance on light to provide a standard measure for distance is not much different from the system we use today on Earth, where the National Institute of Standards and Technology in the United States has defined a meter as “the length of the path traveled by light in vacuum during a time interval of 1/299,792,458 of a second.”
